JFA Documentation Installation

Installation

Install JFA on WordPress.

JFA installs as a normal WordPress plugin. This guide takes you from the release ZIP to a new Family Archive installation ready for its first setup.

Requirements

Before installing JFA, make sure the WordPress site meets the minimum software requirements and that you can install plugins.

WordPress

6.2 or later

A current WordPress installation is recommended.

PHP

8.0 or later

Your hosting environment must provide PHP 8.0 or newer.

JFA does not require a separate genealogy plugin.

People, basic family relationships, GEDCOM import and the genealogy context used by the archive are handled by JFA itself.

1. Download the release

Open the JFA download page and download the current WordPress installation ZIP.

For the current release candidate, the installation file is:

family-archive-0.6.0-rc1.zip

2. Upload JFA to WordPress

1

Open Plugins

In WordPress administration, go to Plugins → Add Plugin.

2

Choose Upload Plugin

Use the WordPress upload option instead of searching the public plugin directory.

3

Select the JFA ZIP

Select the downloaded Family Archive ZIP file and choose Install Now.

4

Activate Family Archive

When WordPress finishes installing the plugin, activate it.

3. What happens after activation?

On a genuinely new JFA installation, activation prepares the Family Archive data model and starts the first-install setup flow.

The setup guide helps establish the initial archive configuration before you begin adding real material.

Upgrading an existing JFA installation?

The first-install guide is intended for new installations. An existing or already configured archive is not sent back through the new-install onboarding as though it were empty.

4. Check the installation health

Before importing a large family tree or uploading important family files, check the JFA system status in WordPress administration.

  • JFA is active without PHP errors.
  • The people database is available.
  • The genealogy provider is available.
  • The uploads and private-media storage checks are healthy.
  • The WordPress process has the permissions it needs.

Back up before using real material

A family archive may eventually contain irreplaceable files and carefully curated metadata. Make sure the WordPress database and archive files are included in a regular backup routine before the archive becomes your working copy.
